Internship interviews are not junior versions of senior interviews. Nobody expects three years of production experience — interviewers are looking for a specific, much smaller set of signals. Knowing what those signals are turns a scary week into a preparable one.
What is actually being assessed
- Fundamentals over breadth — can you explain variables, loops, functions, and one project you built, clearly?
- How you handle not knowing — the single most predictive signal: do you guess wildly or reason out loud from what you know?
- Evidence of self-driving — one finished thing you made outside class proves you build when nobody is grading.
- Communication — can another person follow your explanation? Interviews are comprehension tests of your explanations.
Questions that repeat
Walk me through a project you built. What was the hardest bug you fixed? Here is a simple problem — talk through your approach. Why this company? Prepare honest, specific answers to these four and you have covered most first-round interviews in the market.
Interviewers rarely expect interns to know much. They expect them to think out loud, honestly, from what they do know.
